Founded in 2006, the Dito collective brings together 10 young designers from the same generation, all graduates of various French design schools (École Supérieure d’Art et de Design de Reims, École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs de Paris, École de Design Nantes Atlantique).
Going against the grain of an era where approaches are often individualistic, Dito aims to develop a collaborative and open working method, in which dialogue, exchange and sharing are prioritised as key strengths for contemporary design.
Viewing design as a means rather than an end, Dito’s mission is to create a common, collective and democratic language that enables them to invent a range of objects that are innovative both in form and in the collective process that gave rise to them.
As the initial meetings between Dito’s members highlighted the need to establish a shared culture to lay the foundations for collective work, it was through a series of meetings that a shared repertoire was developed, drawing on photographs, forms, materials and objects. This serves as a working tool designed to enable them to produce “surprising and experimental” works, and it won over the jury of the Agora Grant in September 2007.
Featuring a scenography specially designed for the venue, ‘Dito from scratch’ brings together models, drawings and photographs presented within a familiar setting.
As a manifesto exhibition, this event enables the members of Dito to put their work into perspective and engage with key players in the design world (clients, manufacturers, users, etc.) and with the public in all its diversity.
